2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our fans.
The belief in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Head

Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and tests that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as production continues.
